Why Mindset is Everything

Why is mindset everything? Have you ever felt like you’re just not good enough? Like no matter what you do, you can’t seem to achieve your goals? If so, you’re not alone.

What mindset is

According to Carol Dweck (Professor of Psychology at Stanford University), your mindset can be positive or negative; or in other words, you can have a fixed or growth mindset.

A Fixed Mindset

The first thing to consider is if you have a fixed mindset, you’re likely to give up when things get tough. For instance, you may not even try at all because you don’t believe you can succeed. In truth, you may struggle with feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. It can also prevent you from taking valuable risks or trying new things because you’re afraid of failing.

A fixed mindset is one in which you believe they set your skills and abilities in stone because of experiences or failures. You may think you’re not smart or talented enough to achieve your goals. This can lead to feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

A Growth Mindset

By comparison, a growth mindset is one in which you believe they can develop your skills and abilities. You understand that effort and practice are keys to success. This mindset leads to increased motivation and resilience in the face of setbacks.

Carol Dweck said, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” ( Dweck, 2015)

From time to time, you can expect to face challenges that question your mental grit and resilience. With a growth mindset, you’re more likely to persevere through challenges balanced against falling apart at the first sign of difficulty. You’ll also be more open to feedback and willing to put in the work needed to improve and improve your productivity.
